9th Grade CORE Experience
Every 9th grader at The Hatch School takes the same four year-long core courses, plus their choice of electives in each of the three trimesters.
Having all 9th graders in the same courses frees teachers from scheduling constraints, supporting interdisciplinary project-based learning, off-campus learning experiences, and highly responsive teaching.
Additionally, the 9th grade core encourages the formation of strong relationships early in each student's time at The Hatch School.
Humanities 9
.
Humanities 9 combines English, history, social studies, philosophy, and the arts to help students gain a deeper understanding of the multiple ways people attempt to understand and record the human experience. We begin with an exploration of our individual, multi-faceted identities and build on that framework to examine the ways community and national identities have impacted global events, past and present.
LifeCORE: Biology & Health
.
In Biology 9th grade students explore the multiple, integrated systems of living organisms. From cells to organisms to entire ecosystems, we investigate how disruptions in one area can lead to repercussions elsewhere. Human health-specific examples are regularly integrated into the class so students better understand the impacts of their choices on personal wellness and well-being.
DigiCORE: Integrated Math & Computational Thinking
Integrated Math provides 9th graders the opportunity to follow a highly personalized curriculum together with a small group of peers who are working at a comparable level. The self-paced learning in math pauses periodically so the class can explore the foundations of computational thinking and work collaboratively to apply their learning to real-world problems.
WorldCORE: Integrated Spanish Language & The Spanish-Speaking World
Integrated Spanish allows students to enter the HATCH program at whatever level they need to begin or continue their language studies. Working in small groups, students engage with each other to practice their verbal and written communication skills while using level-appropriate grammar and vocabulary. Investigation of contemporary events in the Spanish-speaking world provides insight into the interconnectedness of language, identity, culture, and history.
Elective Offerings
.
In order to support working with community partners to provide instruction in Fine Arts and Physical Education, all electives will be offered in the same time slot at the end of the day.
Each term, students will be able to choose between four options for the elective block:
